Wächtler joined the NSDAP in 1926. In 1934, he also joined the SS. He followed Hans Schemm after he passed as Gauleiter of Bayreuth. He was executed in April of 1945 because of his rival Ludwig Ruckdeschel accused him of desertion.

Wächtler sloot zich in 1926 aan bij de NSDAP. In 1934 sloot hij zich ook aan bij de SS. Hij volgde Hans Schemm op nadat die was afgetreden als Gauleiter van Bayreuth. Hij werd in april 1945 geëxecuteerd omdat zijn rivaal Ludwig Ruckdeschel hem van desertie beschuldigde.
