Original WW2 Dutch Photo - Excavation of Dutch political prisoners after execution, PDA Camp Amersfoort, Holland (1945)

In march of 1945 the Dutch resistance carried out an attack on the Höhere SS- und Polizeiführer Hanns Albin Rauter, unfortunately this attack failed. As a reprisal many Dutch civilians and resistance fighters, political prisoners and others were executed. In the Dutch Polizeiliches Durchgangslager Amersfoort (PDA), also known as the Amersfoort Concentrationcamp, a total of 49 ''Todeskanidaten'' were executed on the 8th of March as a reprisal on the attack on Rauter. The 49 political prisoners were lead to the shooting range and shot, many of them with flares which caused them to be burned alive.

With the liberation of the Amersfoort Concentration camp, Dutch Prinses Irene Brigade soldiers excavated these executed prisoners to give them a proper burial. This photo series captures the excavation and the placement in their caskets. On the place of the execution, a monument called 'The Stone Human' was built.

In maart 1945 voerde het Nederlandse verzet een aanval uit op de Höhere SS- und Polizeiführer Hanns Albin Rauter, maar deze aanval mislukte helaas. Als represaille werden veel Nederlandse burgers en verzetsstrijders, politieke gevangenen en anderen geëxecuteerd. In het Nederlandse Polizeiliches Durchgangslager Amersfoort (PDA), ook wel concentratiekamp Amersfoort genoemd, werden op 8 maart in totaal 49 ''Todeskanidaten'' geëxecuteerd als represaille op de aanval op Rauter. De 49 politieke gevangenen werden naar de schietbaan geleid en doodgeschoten, velen van hen met vuurpijlen waardoor ze levend werden verbrand.

Na de bevrijding van concentratiekamp Amersfoort hebben Nederlandse soldaten van de Prinses Irene Brigade deze geëxecuteerde gevangenen opgegraven om ze een fatsoenlijke begrafenis te geven. Deze fotoserie legt de opgraving en de plaatsing in hun kisten vast. Op de plek van deze opgraving staat nu het monument 'De Stenen Mens'
