The MV Wilhelm Gustloff was built for the KDF Kraft durch Freude in 1937, operated by HSDG Hamburg Süd. The ship was named after Wilhelm Gustloff, a Swiss nazi who was assassinated by a Jewish medical student in 1936. It was only used for a few years until the Kriegsmarine requisitioned it. From this period, it was used as a Lazarettschiff D and later during Operation Hannibal, in evacuating prisoners and refugees to Norway. The ship was filled with more than 9,000 civilians on its way to freedom, where later a Soviet S-13 submarine spotted the ship and struck it. The ship sank and more then 9.600 of 10.600 boarded on the ship died.
